H.L. Richards High School has one of the proudest wrestling traditions in Illinois. Under legendary IWCOA Hall of Fame coach Tom Heniff, the Bulldogs captured IHSA team state championships in 1975 and 1977, finished second in 1976 and placed third in 1978—four consecutive top-three finishes. Richards has also produced generations of outstanding wrestlers, including two-time IHSA state champion Bill Kelly, who later became an NCAA Division I national champion at Iowa State; IWCOA Hall of Famer Jerry Kelly, an accomplished collegiate All-American; and numerous other state champions, qualifiers and place winners. That tradition continues today, highlighted by Ulyssa Garcia’s IHSA girls state championship in 2025. From its championship teams of the 1970s to its emerging boys’ and girls’ wrestlers of today, Richards wrestling continues to represent Oak Lawn with toughness, discipline and pride. The Oak Lawn Wrestling Club is honored to support the Bulldogs and help develop the next generation of Richards wrestlers.
